By: Editor Harvey Wood
To better describe the three best places in Argentina to visit, I will take over from where my son Brian left off. I am Dr. Harvey L. Wood, Ph.D, International Business Administration and the Publisher/Editor of the newly christened Argentina Travel Magazine.com. We will be trying to present to you all the interesting places to wet your appetites for travel. Some are of world renown such as Cataratas del Iguazu, Many ask the question, “What does Iguazu mean”? Well, in the native dialect, Guaran, it means simply, “Big Water”.
Beyond any doubt, Cataratas del Iguazu, Misiones, Argentina is one of the priviledge unique spots worldwide having 275 falls which were generated eons ago. They are one of the most spectacular and marvelous spectacles in the entire world. They were declared Mankind Patrimony and are enjoyed as as an amazing place located where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay come together. It is located within the Iguazu National Park.
There are miles of trails and improved walkways one may walk to enjoy the beauty of these falls and to hear their mighty roar coming to you through the mist they pour into the air above. It is a photographers dream so make certain you have a digital camera with a large chip or extras as you will fill them up easily.
The walk on the Argentina side follows the gentle sloping hills alongside the river opposite the falls. It is a distance of perhaps 11⁄2 miles and easy to navigate. At the end of the trail is a reception area where there is an elevator to take you up to the upper level of the town. Along the trail you will certainly see numerous local bird species and the always adorable Coatis that will take treats from your hands.
Should you be among the adventurous, you may take a boat along the river and into the mists and waters of the f alls. You will definitely return drenched even though you’ve donned rain coats, hats and boots. These majestically powerful cascades of water are in a semi-tropical jungle setting which are many times wider than Niagra Falls and tremendously higher. Actually, there are hundreds of falls that continue from Argentina into Brazil for a distance of in excess of two miles.
It should be noted that the number of waterfalls will vary considering the time of year but they number into the hundreds. There is a crescent formed rim that Iguazu Falls lies in and you will notice that rainbows are prolific. There ate several catwalks and one in particular from the Brazilian side will take you right over the top of the falls where you look straight down from some. Numerous viewing stands are available with places to sit and even buy refreshments The thunderous roar from the falls can be noticed many miles away.
Iguazu Falls is an awesome experience and to enjoy it you will find many, many good to fantastic hotels and hostels available. Many have adequate to very good restaurants and in the town itself you will find many to chose from serving sumptuous cuisines of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.
The hotels range from Four Star to One Star. Within Puerto Iguazu, Misiones,Argentina you will find such hotels as Iguau Grand Hotel Resort & Casino; Hotel Continental; Julius Caesar Hotel; Sheraton International Iguazu, and, my favorite as a small cozy hotel on the corner in downtown Puerto Iguazu and across the street from the airlines Aerolienas Argentinas, is the Nuevo Hotel with excellent accommodations.
There are several restaurants within walking distance. In the town are tour busses that will take you on fantastic excursions of the area, taxis and, best of all, the private taxi vendors called “remises” which are cheaper and more personal.
Hopefully, when you come to Argentina to enjoy yourselves you will definitely set Cataratas del Iguazu on your agenda as it is one of the most beautiful sites on earth. Near the town are many sites worth seening including the old mission ruins, Misiones.
